SAN DIEGO COUNTY KICKS OF FAMILY LITERACY MONTH!

San Diego County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price was only about two minutes into the story she was reading to the pre-Kindergartener’s when the first child tattled on his parent. “My dad, who’s picking me up today, drinks soda,” said the little boy. Slater-Price was reading “Potter the Otter: A Tale About Water” to a class of pre-K students at North County Serenity House to help First 5 San Diego kick off Family Literacy Month. Besides emphasizing family reading time, the book is a creative lesson to help children make healthier drink choices.

“One of the most important things a parent can do for their child is read to them,” said Slater-Price. “Children then associate reading with learning and with comfort and love.”

The 21 children all sat attentively in neat rows on the floor, eyes affixed as Slater-Price turned and showed the illustrations after she read each page. Colorful images leapt off the pages showing how Goose and Moose gave up their juice, how skunks in a bunch don’t drink punch or how Toada stopped wanting soda.

First 5 San Diego Executive Director Barbara Jimenez then read the book to the group again in Spanish. When she finished, Slater-Price showed the children activities in the back of the book that they could do with their parents.

Then it was quiz time - but no need for panic. These kids knew their stuff. Most hands flew up when the Slater-Price asked if they knew they shouldn’t go to bed without brushing their teeth. They even said they knew to brush their teeth after eating candy or drinking soda (the Supervisor told them it was okay to have some once in a while – just not very often and to make sure you get the sugar off your teeth right away).

Slater-Price, who had been a teacher for 10 years, said she always loved reading time the most and encouraged parents and children to go together and explore the County’s libraries, (www.sdcl.org.)

“It’s easy and it’s fun,” she said. “It’s just a fun time for both the parents and kids.”

One of the most exciting holidays is right around the corner. Children have been trick or treating since the 1930’s, when the term first came into use. Of course, you want to be assured that your child is traversing your neighborhood safely, and there are many ways to keep your children from being sick or injured It’s always a good idea for parents to look through their child’s candy, and throw away any candy that is opened or looks tampered with. Also, young children should be accompanied by an adult or a responsible teenager. Here are some safety tips for both parents and children:

Safety for kids:

To wear a watch they can read in the dark
Not to pet or go near any animals that they don’t know
Try to avoid costumes that include paper on them; some walkways might be lined with candles
Don’t run to the houses! It is much easier to trip and fall while running in a dimly lit area
To try using make-up instead of a mask, as it can obstruct vision
Always use the sidewalks; if there is no sidewalk, walk on the side of the road facing traffic
To stay on well-lit streets, and never enter a house or approach a vehicle
To choose a costume that is not too long; children may trip over long robes or dresses

Safety for Parents:

If your child has a meal before going trick or treating, they are less likely to eat their candy
Discuss and agree on a return time with your child
Make sure all flashlights have fresh batteries
When shopping for costumes, check to see if they are made of flame retardant materials
Make sure that if your child is going to carry a prop or accessory (such as a knife or sword), it is made of a flexible or soft material
Plan a trick or treating route with your child so you know where they are going

hula Vista has its very own major haunted house this Halloween, The Dark, which runs through Oct. 31.

The Dark was an idea created by Diana Ocampo, 37, back in July and since then staff got the house completed in a short timeframe."This haunted house is different from any other because it's a mental thriller, everyone is afraid of the dark because you don't know what is around you," said Ocampo, a partner in the production of The Dark.

The house will be made up of more than eight rooms that include hillbillies, clowns, exorcists and the like.

"The Dark is a unifying theme that connects the rooms by a maze. We try and put things you see in different haunted houses with our own unique spin on it," said Jeff Rankin,43, creative designer of The Dark.

Although the location of The Dark encompasses more than 16,000 square feet, the main concern when creating the haunted house was space.

"We went through a couple of ideas as to where we could have it. Our partner Diana is involved with the paintball field in the Otay Shopping Center, but there is a business running there already, so we kept looking for a location we could use," Rankin said. "We picked the Eastlake Center and they worked with us to set up a space there. Then we worked with lighting and sound, all of the different elements that had to be explored. We connected themes that we wanted and set up a layout to create anticipation. We want the people to not know what's coming, we didn't want to give anything away from room to room."

More than 23 people were hired and designated to scare individuals.

"We worked with Southwestern College, some of the actors who are studying there are working with us, it's an opportunity to show their skills," said Rankin.

The Dark is now open and will run every day through Oct. 31 from 7 p.m. to midnight at 851 Showroom Place, Suite 100, in the Eastlake Design District next to Eastlake Tavern and Bowl and Brew House in Eastlake.

The inaugural Chula Vista Challenge Olympic Distance Triathlon presented by Pulse Endurance Sports. This race will be the most scenic and challenging Olympic distance triathlon course in all San Diego County! The race has been created by local triathletes who thought it was time to go east of the I-5 Freeway to race on the beautiful roads and trails of Chula Vista.

The course will be both challenging but lots of fun! You don't wanna miss it!

Extreme Home Makeover- "Christmas in October" Style

Last Saturday, October 1st, 10 Chula Vista homeowners, eight of them veterans or their loved ones, will receive an early Christmas gift: a remodeled home! Homeowners of this gift are residents that for many different reasons, have been unable to maintain their homes. Others are in danger of losing their home. For these 10 residents, that when "Christmas in October" comes in.

In the past 13 years, the program has worked to preserve and revitalize houses for low-income homeowners and ensure safe, independent and sanitary homes."I think we create small miracles in their lives," co-founder Emerald Randolph said."Christmas in October" started out providing help to low-income seniors and disabled persons but has since expanded its scope to include anyone who qualifies.

The program was started in 1997 by Randolph and former Chula Vista City Councilwoman Patty Davis."I wanted the Christmas in October program because I saw what National City was doing with their Christmas in April program," Randolph said."Many of the people onboard have been with us since we started," she said.*

This will be the fifth year of volunteering for Lowes employee Robin Jones.

"I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to get involved in something that gave back to the community," she said. "I come back each year because of the look on the people's faces and how appreciative they are."*

The Chula Vista Police Department wants to have some 15 officers help out this Saturday.

"It's good to have some kind of a focus as far as giving back," said officer Leo Banales. "This is a tangible way to give back in the sense that we've got family to help and a property picked out."*

Janet Wheeler is the store manager of the Home Depot off H Street in Plaza Court and has two employees who are house captains this year.

"Our biggest struggle is to get people (homeowners) to understand that this is truly free," Wheeler said. "They expect it to be too good to be true, but it's not, it's real."*

Downtown Chula Vista RE-HAB on Hold

Chula Vista City Council voted unanimously to reject a single bid for the Third Avenue Streetscape improvement project due to uncertainity of redevelopment funding....

"We're rejecting the bid because there's not enough funding," city principal civil engineer Kirk Ammerman said.

On Aug. 10, Public Works Director Rick Hopkins received a single bid from 3-D Enterprises in the amount of $4,997,000, which was to be used in addition to $2.5 million in redevelopment funds for the project.

However, staff was later told that the $2.5 million is now uncertain as a result of legal challenges at the state level currently pending in the State Supreme Court.

Executive director of Third Avenue Street Association Greg Mattson said he has supported the revitalization of Third Avenue throughout the process. "In one sense, we're disappointed because we want to move forward with the allocations," he said. "But we support the city's recommendation - they are critical in keeping this intact."

Staff directed council to apply for a Community Development Block Grant and capital improvement grants totaling $750,000, and appropriate $400,000 from the balance of the traffic signal fund. This money would allow for improvements from H to F streets, but with significant revisions to phase one of the project.

"We're scaling down the project as far as distance and scope of work," City Manager Jim Sandoval said. "We don't want to scale down the quality."

The phase one improvements would have been completed next month and included shorter crossings and improved pedestrian and multi-modal accessibility, more open sidewalks for outdoor dining, energy efficient pedestrian lighting, street trees and new seating.

"The village community is eager to have the construction start as soon as possible," Mattson said. "The more we wait, the more issues arise."

Councilman Steve Castaneda said he's adamantly opposed to diverting money from the traffic fund.

"If we're taking $750,000 out of the general fund, what is the guarantee that the government will rejuvenate that fund?" he asked city staff.

Assistant City Manager Gary Halbert said there's no guarantee.

Castaneda said there are many accidents that occur on Second Avenue and E Street.

"I hear from people all the time about problems with intersections in west Chula Vista," he said. "If we have money to improve flagrant safety problems, why aren't we doing it?"

Ammerman said that traffic signal funds come from developers and are intended for capacity improvements and to leverage federal safety funds.

Hopkins said it will be revised so contractors will only have to do 30 percent.

The bid will go back out mid-October and staff will come back to council sometime in December when they get ready to award a contract.

Staff expects to begin construction on the project in January, pending a ruling from the State Supreme Court Jan. 15. Once issued, the ruling could either result in funds of between $1.2 million and $2.5 million or nothing at all.

Beautify Chula Vista 10/22!

This popular neighborhood clean-up event that is composed of dedicated local volunteers looking to make Chula Vista a CLEAN, SAFE & BEAUTIFUL PLACE! Beautify Chula Vista is in need of sponsorship support to help provide supplies, t-shirts, water, lunch and a few other things. With the Centennial this year Mayor and host Cheryl Cox is looking for as much support as possible! Other sponsers/hosts include Chula Vista City Council, I Love a Clean San Diego, Allied Waste Services and the Chula Vista Centennial. This even is scheduled for Saturday, October 22 from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Sponsorship support of in-kind donations or monetary contributions is critical of the continued success of this clean-up effort. Beautify Chula Vista is a program that highlights and promotes neighborhood revitalization. Teams of volunteers are assigned to paint out graffiti and pick up trash along city streets. More than 800 volunteers are expected to turn out for this year’s event in southwest Chula Vista. The kick-off location is Harborside Park, 670 Oxford Street.

Organizers are looking for sponsors to help provide t-shirts, water, supplies, and lunch and supporters for raffle items for all volunteers. Names of sponsors and supporters will appear on the web site www.beautifychulavista.org, on volunteer t-shirts, on the banner and mentioned by Mayor Cheryl Cox at the Beautify Chula Vista event.

Giving back with Ronald McDonald House - 9/28

Size 14 red shoes, colorful wigs and huge signs will invade the crosswalks of the South County on Sept. 28.

San Diego's Ronald McDonald House volunteers will be fundraising in the streets during their second annual Red Shoe Day.

"Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for children," said Chuck Day, president/CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. "The funds are going to help us do what we do every day."

"Street team" volunteers are needed to collect cash donations at major intersections in Bonita, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City and Paradise Hills.

"We are looking for 1,000 volunteers, we have about 600 right now," said Day.

Those that wish to volunteer can visit www.rmhcsd.org/redshoeday and follow the instructions to register, attend orientation, and get started on a personalized fundraising page.

"We will provide Red Shoe Day shirts, website tool kits and canisters," said Day. "We are going to give them what they need to make it possible. Volunteers will be at a lot of street corners and McDonald's drive-thru lines; you'll definitely be able to recognize them."

The street corners that will have volunteers will be Bonita Road and Otay Lakes Road, H Street and Paseo Ranchero, H Street and Broadway, Hilltop Drive and L Street, Highway 805 at Telegraph Canyon Road, East H Street and Tierra Del Rey, Palm Avenue and Ninth Street, Coronado Avenue and Hollister Street, Palm Avenue and Saturn Boulevard, National City Boulevard and 24th Street, National City Boulevard and East Eighth Street.

"I live in Bonita and I personally will be moving around town saying thank you to the volunteers," said Day.

Last year the McDonald House raised around $70,000; this year the goal has been raised to $100,000.

"Every dollar stays at the San Diego Ronald McDonald House," said Day.

How to Prepare for Blackouts

Have you thought about how you’ll be able to complete important tasks during power blackouts? You’ll need to eat, drink, stay warm, sleep and even entertain yourself. It’s easy to take these simple things for granted when you have electricity, but you need to be prepared to do them without power. Here’s how to prepare for blackouts:

Decide on Where to Meet

If everyone is at home during a blackout then you won’t need to worry about getting your family together in one location. However, if family members are scattered at different locations, you’ll need to agree ahead of time where to meet. Your home may be the ultimate destination, but you might need to meet somewhere else first before you travel there. Come up with a plan to meet in a safe location, such as a close friend’s house or your workplace. Then come up with plan B and plan C, in case it’s impossible to get to certain places during a blackout.

Plan Who to Call

You may not be able to make local calls during a blackout. Choose a relative or friend who lives out-of-state for everyone to call. This is a way for everyone to “check in” and notify each other of where they’re located, if they can’t get to the designated meeting place. You should ask your contact ahead of time if they would be willing to be a point of contact during emergencies. It’s important to choose someone who is reliable and easy to reach.

Store Wool Blankets

If your only heating source is an electrical heating system, you won’t be able to warm yourself if a blackout occurs during the winter. One way to guard against losing body heat is to store wool blankets, which retain more body heat than other blankets available. Cotton blankets don’t store heat well, and won’t dry in cold weather if they get wet. If you can’t afford to buy (or can’t find) a 100% wool blanket, at least buy a wool blend.

Get an AM/FM Receiver

You don’t want to miss any announcements and news about the blackouts. How will you know what’s going on if you can’t turn on the television or radio? You can get updates with a hand-cranked AM/FM receiver. You don’t need batteries or electricity to operate these. Just crank one up, and you’ll be able to hear weather reports and other communications about any blackouts.

Buy an Emergency Backup Generator

You won’t have to worry about blackouts as much if you have a generator. However, it may not be a viable (or legal) option for you if you live in an apartment or an urban area.

If you can use an emergency backup generator, it’s a good idea to buy one for blackouts. These require gas, diesel, propane or solar power to operate, and provide you with electricity when your power company can’t. You can buy a temporary, portable generator or get a licensed electrician to install a regular one directly into your home’s electrical system.

How you prepare for blackouts is dependent on your location and unique family circumstances. However, everyone can benefit and be better prepared by following the above steps.

Photocopy all documents, including passport, credit cards and tickets before leaving home and store copies in the hotel safe.
Non-travel papers such as local credit cards and irreplaceable photos, should be left at home.
Use traveler's checks and credit cards. Keep a record of their serial numbers in a separate and safe place in case they are lost or stolen.
Carry only the cash you need in small denominations and never discuss your plans or the amount of money you are carrying.
Carry your purse close to your body and your wallet in your front pocket.
Keep track of your plane, train or bus tickets -they are as good as cash.
While driving, respect and obey the traffic signs. Don't drink and drive, and always use your seat belt.
Never pick up hitchhikers.
If your car breaks down, turn on your flashers and raise the hood. If you must abandon your car, park safely and keep all passengers together. Freeway call boxes are spaced one half mile apart and are programmed to identify your location.

Hotel/Motel Security

Determine the most direct route to and from your room to the fire escapes, elevators and nearest telephone.
Use all auxiliary locking devices on doors and windows.
Use the door viewer to identify anyone requesting entry. Open the door only if you are certain the person has a legitimate reason to enter your room. If in doubt, call the front desk.
Report any lost or stolen items to the management and to the police.
Never leave money, checks, credit cards, jewelry and other valuables, extra room keys or car keys in the room. Take valuables with you or leave them in the hotel safety deposit box.
Report to the management any suspicious activities in the corridors or rooms. Remember - the only way to stop crime is to get involved in crime prevention.

Sightseeing

Ask for directions at your hotel/motel or an info center to those attractions you want to visit.
Looking lost may make you look like an easy target for crime. If you get lost, find an open business and ask for directions.
Be wary of strangers who seem overly anxious to help you.
Visitors are major targets for pickpockets in many cities throughout the world. Stay alert to what's going on around you.
When traveling in any unfamiliar place, avoid driving isolated highways at night and, if possible, avoid traveling alone.
Whether you're biking, skating or riding the waves, don't forget the protective gear, sunscreen and drinking water.

Love Your Block is a tested, high-impact community service opportunity for Chula Vista residents to demonstrate their neighborhood pride, work together, and revitalize areas on their block needing attention or some extra tender loving care.

Thanks to the generous support of The Home Depot Foundation, Love Your Block will provide 20 competitive mini-grants comprised of a $500 Home Depot gift card per grant. Each winning neighborhood group will purchase the needed supplies for their local improvement project and can request city services as available to support the effort.

Love Your Block Applicant Criteria include:

• For the purpose of the Love Your Block campaign, a block is defined as a minimum of 10 residents in proximity to one another within the City of Chula Vista

• The group must be volunteer-led. Eligible groups include neighborhood, tenant and block associations as well as community garden groups, school, and church-based groups.

• Each group must have a detailed and realistic action plan for engaging residents to carry out a physical transformation of their block.

• Residents must implement and complete their volunteer project between September 2011 and the end of November 2011.

• Grant recipients must also commit to providing before/after pictures as well as measure specific impact, i.e., number of trees planted, number of pounds of trash collected, number of pounds of mulch distributed, square footage of graffiti removed, number of green spaces/gardens created, number of physical resources created , and number of volunteers engaged.

Potential Projects include, but are not limited to:

• vacant lot clean-up
• weeding
• litter removal
• graffiti removal
• fence replacement/painting
• pet waste bag dispenser(s)
• tree planting (not in city right of way)

BEWARE CHULA VISTA- WATER TO INCREASE!

Ratepayers in the South County BEWARE! The "South Bay Irrigation Distric"t may see a 2.5 percent increase in the month of September's water bill... The proposed increase comes after rates last year rose by an almost 5.6 percent, due to a water rate "restructuring" that was taken into effect in order to improve water conservation...

Local newspaper The Star News reported: "The new increase is pretty minimal," said Richard Stevenson, director of finance for Sweetwater Authority. "Most calls we are receiving refer to last year's increase."

Mike Seiler, president of Bonita Highlands Homeowners Association, said residents were not anticipating such a high rate.

"We were expecting a modest increase and we were blindsided by this," he said.

"People began noticing the new rate structure, which emphasizes higher rates for those who use higher amounts of water, this summer," Stevenson said. "Larger lots and landscaping will put higher bills on those customers.""

Sweetwater Authority, administers water rates/services for parts of Chula Vista, all National City & Bonita said they are proposing the increase to lower "readiness to serve" charge rates for lower water use customers, shift capacity cost burden over to medium to high water users and provide strong financial motivation to conserve water. Jose Preciado a board director for the Sweetwater Authority said this "Our proposal is for a 2.5 percent increase associated with some capital construction that we'd like to accomplish this year and an additional rate increase county pass through rate, which will vary depending on water use,".Preciado said the proposed rate increase is necessary but the issue needs to be examined closely.

The meeting to consider another water rate increase is Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m. at 505 Garrett Ave. in Chula Vista.

1. Begin by shopping at home. One way to get around spending hundreds of dollars per child is to avoid buying everything new. Take an inventory of what your family already owns. Have your kids really outgrown all of their shoes and clothing? Do you have an abundance of pens, pencils, folders and rulers? (Note: It’s not hard to hide company logos on folders and no

2. Start sleuthing for bargains. Now is an excellent time to become highly attuned to clearance sales in your area and coupons that can help you at this time of year. When you find a good sale for school supplies, stock up for the entire year, not just the immediate future. Be aware that some of the best sales for backpacks, Thermoses and lunch boxes are likely to surface in September after school has already started. Can your kids make do until then?

3. Get thee to a dollar store. You might be surprised by the selection of paper products and other school supplies you’ll find there. Bring your child – a potential bargain-hound-in-training! – to the store with you to get his or her buy-in on any purchases you make.

4. Scour garage sales, thrift stores and consignment shops. These places typically require some legwork, but the bargains to be had are astonishing. On certain days of the week, some thrift stores allow you to fill an entire bag with clothing and buy it all for $3 or $4. 5. Remember eBayand craigslist. If your child simply will die without a specific high-end designer brand, look for new or slightly used clothing online at sites like these. The savings could be substantial, and the process could be less time-consuming than the thrift-store-and-yard-sale route.

6. Set ground rules for clothes shopping. Choose clothes that will give your children room to grow. Pick up extra pairs of shoes in larger sizes when you find a good sale. Solid, neutral colors and classic styles – such as simple pullover shirts – are ideal because they’re easy to mix and match and less likely to look dated over time if you have younger kids.

7. Buy the right backpack. If you know your child is likely to overstuff his or her backpack, opt for a smaller one. Kids shouldn’t carry more than 20 percent of their own weight on their backs. Any pack you buy should have wide, padded shoulder straps. Rolling backpacks are available – if your child really will use the wheels and not just carry that extra weight around.

8. Don’t overspend on technology. Homework can be almost impossible to do these days without a computer and access to the Internet. If you’re thinking of investing in a personal computer exclusively for your child’s use, look for deals. There’s no need to pay top dollar for this purchase. Again, check out eBay and craigslist, and remember that refurbished computers are another option. As for other technology – such as a cell phone, an mp3 player, a handheld video-game player and the like – only you can be the judge of what your child should get to have. If you view a cell phone as a necessity for safety reasons, be careful to sign up for a calling plan that will actually work well for your family, and teach your child not to subscribe to joke-of-the-day services, special ring-tone services and other kinds of “premium text messaging.” Otherwise it’s all too easy to get clobbered with astronomical cell-phone bills.

9. Track down the right calculator. If your child needs a fancy calculator for trigonometry class, bite the bullet and invest in a good one. It will last for years – so many years, in fact, that one of your kids’ grandparents might already have one that you could borrow free of charge.

10. Teach important money lessons. Back-to-school season lends itself to having frank discussions with your children about money, budgeting and needs vs. wants. Depending on their ages and maturity levels, you could negotiate back-to-school budgets with your kids and allow them to manage those budgets entirely. If they want anything above and beyond the dollar amount you’ve agreed to provide, let them use their allowance money or babysit, mow lawns or wash cars to pay for it themselves.

Ed Brand Returns as SUHSD Superintendent

With the not so "happy" ending to Jesus Gandara's run as the SUHSD School Board Superintendent on Monday, the members of the Sweetwater Union High School District appointed former Superintendent Ed Brand, as Superintendent effective immediately. Gandara's contract as was terminated after much suspicious on poor spending and decision making.

Brand has lots of experience in this position as he did serve as Superintendent from 1995-2005 (for the past 3 years he has been working in the Real Estate industry). With a

Gandara is receiving a severance package of $416,675 and Brand's monthly compensation is $20,000 for the next year and will be looked at again for either permanent employment for appointment of another Superintendent. Good News South County: TRAFFIC RELIEF IS COMING!

Great news was just released by the California Transporation Commission giving us, South County residents a reason to SMILE!!! This past Tuesday June 28th, SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) awarded $100million to the construction of 2 carpools on interstate 805 from East Palomar all the way to State Route 15! As we can only imagine- this a great thing!!!

The $100 million will be applied to the construction of "high occupancy vehicle" (HOV) lanes, one in each direction on the South County section of the freeway.

The first phase of the project -- between SR 54 and SR 15 -- is expected to be awarded to contractors in March 2012. The second phase, between East Palomar Street and SR 54 -- is scheduled to go to contractors a month later, according to a SANDAG spokesman.
The other great benefit will be extended to the following commuters: express buses and FasTrak account holders.

Park View Little League Celebrates Opening Day in a Big Way

It's the first of March and that means little league baseball is here! The sun was shining on Saturday and the weather was perfect. Park View Little League in Chula Vista had a great opening day that included rock climbing, a gaming truck, inflatable baseball, home run derby, auctions, raffles, food and merchandise vendors.

Opening ceremonies began with the parade of T-ball teams marching onto the Majors field. This year the district has opened up T-ball to 4 year olds, and has a special 6 year old team. The smallest of the league's baseball players released green and gold balloons to officially start the 2011 season.

The day continued for most with team pictures and for a few lucky teams, scrimmages later that afternoon.

The season's first official games start on the 12th. Come on down, Park View is on Oleander, north of East Palomar, by the Boys and Girls Club.

Thursday morning, February 24th, 2011, the morning air is still crisp from a chilly night, but there is a beautiful sunrise and the San Diego Country Club has never looked so gorgeous.

The early morning golfers are teeing off, the Chula Vista Rotary is having their monthly breakfast in the dining room, and McMillin Realty is setting the stage for yet another annual awards and recognition banquet. The Realtors and staff will be trailing in soon and the tables are being set with last minute decorations, and video equipment is being tested. Steve Harney, nationally recognized motivational speaker and author, has flown in from Long Island to speak to the South County firm's agents.

Finally Scott McMillin pulls up, agents have arrived, the festivities begin. In this market of foreclosures, short sales, and distressed homes, the real estate industry has been one of the hardest hit. It is not a job for the faint at heart. It is a difficult job at best these days. So for a company to stand the test of time is a tribute to its integrity, character and reputation. McMillin Realty is such a company. On this morning, Scott McMillin gave tribute to all his agents, and awards to his top producers for such a remarkable year they had in 2010. Rancho del Rey Middle School's Jazz Ensemble Goes on Tour

The Cool jazz stylings by the Rancho del Rey Middle School Jazz Ensemble, led by Mr. Fred Lee, will be appreciated and enjoyed today by the faculty and students of Corky McMillin Elementary School in the heart of Otay Ranch, Chula Vista.

The Jazz ensemble was only started this school year by new comer to the school - but definitely not to the district, Mr. Lee. So, for these kids to play with such connection, vision and passion for a genre of music that is probably not their first love, is a tribute to the teacher that has given them so much. The kids are really amazing to hear, and it is great to see them touring local elementary schools exciting and inspiring a new group of kids to follow in their still growing footsteps.

Lets hope with the success today at McMillin Elementary they will be asked to come to other local schools and perform. I know how excited they all were to go and show off their skills. It really is a win/win situation. What more can we ask for in our public schools?... Don't we live in the best place EVER?.... (that was rhetorical, of course we do!)

Free After School For McMillin by McMillin

CHULA VISTA — At McMillin, one of their core principles is, "We support the communities in which we live and work". Those aren't just words on a plaque to the South County Real Estate Company, they are a mantra which every employee and real estate agent works and lives by.

A new partnership is providing Corky McMillin Elementary students free after-school academic support.

Launched in October, the McMillin Intervention Study Team offers varying levels of support Monday through Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. Students may stay for as little as 15 minutes or up to two hours.

Support includes homework help with roaming tutors, a computer lab with educational software, and small group and one-on-one support for students designated as struggling by their teachers and standardized test scores.

Part of the program is funded by Southwestern College, but most is paid through the school’s McMillin endowment fund that was established by the children of the late-construction company patriarch Corky McMillin.

Up to 100 students each day receive aid from nine Southwestern College student tutors who are paid minimum wage through a college grant. Tutors, most of whom are studying to become teachers or social workers, also received training from the school, McMillin Elementary Principal Jorge Mora said. No prior after-school tutoring program existed at the site.

Mora reached out to Southwestern after he was made aware of available endowment money. About $8,000 from the $46,000 endowment will fund five tutors this year. Southwestern College is spending about $6,600 this year to pay for four tutors.

“There is always a need to help kids beyond the regular school day. The challenge is to try and find the funds that will allow us to do that, the time, the personnel that it takes to do it justice,” Mora said.

The school — named for the San Diego-based Corky McMillin Cos. — is also set to receive 30 new Hewlett-Packard computers for the computer lab, a gift totaling $37,000 from Vonnie McMillin, mother of the three sibling benefactors.

“We believe in giving back in the communities in which we live and work. My mom still lives in that community and we all work down there. The community has been very good to us,” said Mark McMillin, president and chief executive officer of Corky McMillin Companies. “After-school care is usually just games and fun. They are taking these kids and they try to help them with their homework.”

Students say they appreciate the program.

“If I struggle with something, they help me,” said fifth-grader Sunwoo Kim.

Sixth-grader Agustin Richardson uses the computer lab daily to fulfill his Compass Learning software homework and take advantage of the tutors.

“Sometimes I don’t get the homework. I can ask questions and understand what to do,” Agustin said, adding that he has noticed improvement in his grades.

Parents have also noticed the benefits.

“Prior to M.I.S.T., homework was a struggle,” parent Lisa Johnson said. “It lightens the load at home. She gets it done right away and not done late at night. It helps families have more quality time at home.”

Her third-grade daughter Jessica agreed.

“It’s better to do it here, so when you get it done, you can play,” she said.

Saira Buelna, 20, says her work as a tutor is helping her get a feel for the teaching profession.

“A lot of these kids have trouble and need extra help. A lot of the parents can’t help the kids at home,” she said.

She also sees her role as somewhat of a mentor.

“I always wanted to be an elementary schoolteacher and teach them about values, about staying in middle school and high school,” Buelna said.

School officials said they expect to see an uptick in student performance on the state standardized tests this spring.

South County Market Conditons early 2011

South County real estate market conditions, as we enter into February seem to be warming up a bit for our fortuitous buyers. This is really their market. Inventory is high, prices are at an all time low, and interest rates are historically low. For inventory under $400K we are even seeing multiple offers again (especially on our Short Sale and Bank owned properties). Otay Ranch, Sunbow, Lomas Verdes and many areas of Eastlake are seeing prices unseen since prior to 2004.

The upper end markets of Rolling Hills Ranch, the Woods, and even parts of Rancho del Rey are still softening a bit. There are many factors that hamper the market in those areas. Stiffer mortgage restrictions on jumbo loans, state of the economy, and when the bulk of your move up market has lost their equity and/or their home to Short Sale or Foreclosure, the buyer pool is greatly diminished. We do, however, expect to see a healthy recovery in this market, it will just take more time.

Rancho del Rey Middle School Proud New Percussion Ensemble

Rancho del Rey Middle School has a new music teacher. Well, new to them anyways. Mr. Fred Lee has been around the South Bay music department of the Sweetwater Union High School System for over 25 years, and now it is RDR's turn to experience his brilliance.

Last Wednesday night parents and community leaders were treated with musical delights by Mr. Lee's Jazz Band and Advanced Bands, but last night was a real treat. Last night Mr. Lee unveiled his true passion... The Drum Line...

Until this year, RDR Middle never had a percussion class. By next semester Mr. Lee hopes to double the size, and eventually hopes to get them competition ready and compete against other schools. After seeing the small group last night and hearing their magical sounds, I have no doubt Mr. Lee will accomplish his goals.

Every now and then I get a great piece of advice, an interesting email, or come across an interesting news story I like to share. This particular email from my tax man I thought was worthy of spreading the word to my fellow tax paying citizens. Times are tough for everyone.

IRS audits have more than doubled in the past decade. The number of taxpayers targeted is likely to continue to increase in the years ahead as the federal government tries to boost tax revenues to close its huge budget deficit.

High earners, small-business owners, the self-employed and those with offshore accounts face the greatest risks -- but an audit can happen to anyone.

Most audits are simple "correspondence exams" -- an IRS computer identifies a math error... mismatched data... a missing form... or some other straightforward mistake. Once you are contacted by the IRS, you mail in the additional payment or information requested and the matter often is resolved without further fuss.

You face a much more significant audit if the IRS requests a meeting. Although many taxpayers choose to handle this on their own, it is best to hire an experienced tax attorney, certified public accountant (CPA) or enrolled agent (who is required to pass a test to represent taxpayers in dealing with the IRS). This could cost from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the experience level of the professional you hire, the complexity of the audit and where you live. Costs could climb even higher if there are appeals or the case goes to court.

Whether you work with a representative or go it alone, it pays to be aware of IRS agents’ latest tactics... and the often-overlooked tools available to you.

THE TRICKIEST TechniqueS

The surprise phone call. Prior to 2009, audit notifications almost always were sent through the mail. Now IRS agents sometimes contact taxpayers by telephone out of the blue to tell them that they are being audited. The shock of this call may cause a taxpayer to say more than he/she should.

What to do: If you receive such a call, take down the IRS agent’s contact information, say that you are represented by a tax preparer or tax lawyer (or that you may hire one) and that this representative will be in contact. Say nothing else -- you have a legal right to consult a tax adviser before responding to IRS questions. And be aware that in some cases, the caller could be a scammer posing as an IRS agent in hopes of obtaining sensitive data, so don’t supply personal information.

Inflexible deadline. The IRS requires taxpayers to respond to most audit notices within just 15 or 30 days. Those deadlines have become increasingly inflexible in recent years.

Example: Fail to respond to a correspondence exam notice within 30 days, and the disputed amount becomes a final assessment to be handled by the collection department, making it very difficult and expensive to challenge the IRS’s position -- even if you can prove that the IRS is wrong.

What to do: Always contact the IRS by the deadline on the notice, and ask what in particular the IRS wants to cover. Do so by certified mail so that you have proof of when your reply was received. If you intend to hire a representative, do this as soon as possible so that your rep has time to respond.

Casual chitchat. Anything you say to an IRS agent can be used against you, and agents increasingly are trained to get taxpayers to say things they shouldn’t.

Example: An auditor swapped fishing stories with the owner of a part-time boat charter business, then asked whether the business ever was likely to make money. The owner jokingly replied that he loved fishing so much that he didn’t really care if it did. The agent said this quip showed that the business was just a hobby, and the owner’s tax losses were disallowed.

What to do: If you work with a representative, politely refer all questions from the IRS to your tax pro -- even questions that seem innocuous. Let your representative meet with the IRS without you unless the representative specifically advises you to accompany him. If you do not hire a representative, politely avoid small talk. Respond to financial queries by writing down the questions and promising to provide the requested information as soon as possible. Supply these answers in writing to reduce the possibility of misspeaking or saying too much, and keep a copy.

Chula Vista's Animal Care Facility will sponsor a free, family carnival to highlight the needs of homeless cats at Chula Vista's animal shelter. The adoption event will be held at the new and improved facility located at 130 Beyer Way on Saturday, August 28 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Adoption fees will be waived for all kittens and cats. Animal care staff is hoping the special event will draw attention to the plight of the region's orphaned felines.

Besides adopting your new feline friend, each new "parent" will also receive a tote full of goodies, including a ticket to be entered into a prize bowl for gift certificates to local restaurants, a gift basket and more.

Entertainment beginning at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. includes the Fire Department's search and rescue dog, Cody, story time for kids, Frazzle the Clown and Alakazam Magic Show.

Last year, the shelter took in more than 3,600 cats in need. But between today's slow economic conditions and an extended kitten season, the staff has been hit with a tidal wave of kittens too young to survive in a shelter environment. The shelter's foster care program has been very successful in helping these tiny animals survive and thrive until they are ready to be adopted.

But the shelter is reaching maximum capactiy to house the kittens and cats and is in desperate need of help and homes.

Another World Series for Chula Vista Boys

They helped win the 2009 Little League World Series and now Bulla Graft, Andy Rios and Isaiah Armenta are only five games away from the world championship at the Pony-13 World Series.

On Saturday, the Chula Vista North 13-under team beat Evansville, Indiana, 12-11, after beating the Bahamas 10 to 0 in their opening game at the 2010 Pony-13 League Baseball World Series

The boys are a little older and their new league is a little different.

In the Pony League, the distance between the bases are set further apart as the children get older, said Pony-13 World Series tournament host Jess Jaime.

In Little League, the children play on bases set 60-feet apart, Jaime explained. In Pony League, the bases for 13 and under are set 80-feet apart, he said.

“[Its] More of a challenge,” Jaime said. ” The kids get bigger and stronger, so they can hit further.”

Clearly, Graft and his team were ready to take on the challenge.

Soon, the boys will be headed to high school and the Pony League will prepare them for the transition, Jaime said.

In high school baseball, the bases are set 90-feet apart, he added.

The boys and their new teammates Ricky Reynoso, Justin Sparby, Seamus Beyerle, Tucker Torano, Casey McPherson, Robby Weissenfels, Brandon Torio, Hudson Pearson, Isaac Vargas and Daniel Schneeman beat out Cypress, Calif. on Wednesday, and won the opportunity to travel north to match up again the Caribbean Zone champs.

Last summer, in front of more than 30,000 people in Williamsport, Pa. — and many more watching around the world — the Park View Little League team became the first team from San Diego County to win the Little League World Series in more than 40 years. The Blue Bombers from Chula Vista won the coveted title, 6-3, over Chinese Taipei in a game filled with drama.

The other boys, including Kiko Garcia and Luke Ramirez, are on different teams this year, said Jannine Tejada, who is the player agent for Chula Vista North. Jensen Peterson and Junior Porras, who were on last year’s winning team, played in the CVN league but were on a second All-Star team, which also made it to super-regionals but did not advance to the zone-playoff round for the championship.

14U: USA perfect in Bronze win - WAY TO GO KIKO!!!!

DeMers, Haseley, Garcia combine for perfect outing

MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Joe DeMers, Adam Haseley and Kiko Garcia combined to throw a perfect game as the USA Baseball 14U National Team defeated Brazil, 6-0, to capture the Bronze medal at the COPABE Pan Am 'A' 14U Championships Saturday at Dennis Martinez Stadium.

The perfect game is the second in Team USA 14U history, following Jimmy Wallace's in 2008 against Guatemala. It was also the fourth no-hitter in Team USA history, and the second in Nicaragua.

DeMers started and worked 6 1/3 perfect innings, throwing just 70 pitches to record 19 outs, 10 of which were strikeouts. The 10 strikeouts ties Matt Crownover (2007) for the most in a single game.

Haseley came on with one out in the seventh and induced a 4-3 putout. He then gave way to Garcia, who threw three pitches and got the final out of the game on another 4-3 out.

For Garcia and Haseley, it was their second no-hitter of the week as the duo combined to throw a three-inning no-hitter against Honduras on Thursday.

DeMers got the win and ended the tournament having thrown 10 1/3 innings in two appearances. He posted an earned run average of 0.68 and allowed just one hit as opponents batted .030 against him.

He threw 13 strikeouts in his two combined appearances.

Haseley and Garcia, meanwhile, combined to throw six innings, allowing no hits with nine strikeouts.

Team USA managed just five hits against Brazil Saturday, but that was enough to support the perfect game and get the squad the Bronze medal.

The Americans were led by Jesse Kuet, who had two of the team's five hits.

Team USA scored its first run of the game in the bottom half of the third. Kuet narrowly reached on a two-out dribbler to third, and moved to second on a balk with Blake Wiggins at the plate. Wiggins then walked on a 3-2 pitch.

Three pitchers later, both Wiggins and Kuet moved up two bases when Brazil catcher Leonardo Yorozuy threw an errant pickoff attempt to first down the right field line, giving The Americans a 1-0 advantage. Brazil pitcher Luiz Pego, however, was able to minimize the damage and force Team USA to strand Wiggins at third to end the inning.

Team USA added to the lead with two runs in the fourth on a double steal. Luke Alexander took third and scored on an errant throw by Yorozuy, while Kyle Marsh, who had been at first, stole second, then advanced two bases on the throw to make it 3-0.

The Americans scored their third run of the fourth and fourth run of the game when Joe DeMers, who had walked with one out, scored on a wild pitch out of the hand of reliever Marcelo Matsumoto.

Luke Alexander posted Team USA's third hit of the game and first out of the infield in the fifth when he singled up the middle with two outs, driving in Wiggins from third. That made it 5-0 in favor of The Americans.

DeMers added to his special Saturday by hitting a solo home run in the sixth to make it 6-0, Team USA. The round-tripper was his third of the tournament and Team USA's 11th.

Pego took the loss after allowing three runs and a hit in 3 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out four.

Team USA ended the championships with a 4-2 record, while Brazil will go home with a 3-3 mark over its six games. Wiggins was the lone Team USA player on the all-tournament team. He batted .636 (7-for-11) with three home runs and six RBIs.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua - The USA Baseball 14U National Team posted 18 hits, including five home runs, in a 23-0 three-inning defeat of Honduras Thursday at Dennis Martinez Stadium.

The 18 hits is one shy of the team single-game record of 19 set in 2007 against El Salvador. The five home runs is tied for the second-most in a single game, and the 23 runs is seven shy of the team record of 30 set against Mexico in 2008.

The 23 runs are second-most behind only that game against Mexico.

Sixteen of Team USA's 17 players saw action in the win, and all but three finished with at least one official at bat. Those 13 players each tallied at least one hit, with Brady Aiken and Isaiah Deutsch leading the way with three hits apiece.

Additionally, Kiko Garcia and Adam Haseley combined to throw a three-inning no hitter, with only Kevin Reyes able to reach base when leading off Honduras' half of the first with a walk. Garcia struck out five of the six batters he faced while Haseley struck out all three he faced in the third.

Garcia picked up the win to improve to 1-0.

Team USA scored 11 runs in the first, which saw the squad post eight hits while sending 14 batters to the plate. Blake Wiggins led off the game with a home run, his third of the COPABE Pan Am 'A' 14U Championships.

Deutsch, Matt Collins, Ryan Johnson and Joe DeMers each hit home runs in the win, which improved Team USA's record to 3-1. Honduras, meanwhile, dropped to 1-3.

Aiken had two doubles and he drove in two. Luke Alexander was 2-for-2, while Johnson, on the strength of his home run, drove in three.

Other multiple-RBI efforts came from Collins, whose two-run shot came in Team USA's three-run second. DeMers drove in three with a three-run home run in the third, while Troy Stokes, Garcia and Deutsch each drove in two.

Team USA left just two runners on, in the third, while Honduras left on just one in a game that lasted one hour, 25 minutes.

Honduras starter Juan Saravia lasted just an out before being pulled. He allowed six hits and eight runs while walking one.

He was replaced by Carlos Cordero, one of five pitchers on the day for Honduras. Cordero struck out three in 1 1/3 innings and he allowed five hits and six runs.

The game marked the final contest of pool play for both teams. Team USA will play Venezuela in the second of two semifinal games on Friday at Dennis Martinez Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET (2 p.m. in Managua).

The winners of Mexico-Brazil (Friday's first semifinal) and USA-Venezuela will play in the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. Managua time. The losers will play in a consolation game Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Friday's game is scheduled to be streamed live on multinoticiastv.com although no live stats are available. Note there is also a web site, beisbolnica.com, with information on the tournament, including stats, rosters and standings.

Increased coyote sightings in Eastlake

The Chula Vista community of Eastlake is guarding against an influx of coyotes.

In the past few weeks, two dogs have been attacked and killed, and last Sunday, a teenage girl was also attacked in Spring Valley.

The Department of Fish and Game said coyotes are native to Southern California and many housing developments have spread into their territory. Experts said homeowners are giving coyotes a reason to get closer to neighborhoods, as they are drawn in by food and garbage left outside. Even worse, some homeowners have been feeding the coyotes.

There is nothing new about coyote sightings in eastern Chula Vista, experts said. The city’s master plan communities have been designed with open space greenbelts intertwined in between the neighborhoods, and the green belts give coyotes a safe passageway directly into the heart of neighborhoods.

Curious Coyote Facts

Only 5-20% of coyote pups survive their first year.

The coyote can run at almost 40 mph and can get over a 8' fence.

Coyotes can breed with both domestic dogs and wolves. A dog-coyote mix is called a "coydog."

The coyote is more likely afraid of you than vice-versa.

Coyotes maintain their territory by marking it with urine.

One of the most adaptable animals in the world, the coyote can change its breeding habits, diet and social dynamics to survive in a wide variety of habitats. Coyotes have a good sense of smell, vision and hearing which, coupled with evasiveness, enables them to survive both in the wild and occasionally in the suburban areas of large cities. They are common in most rural areas, but because of their secretive nature, few are seen. Efforts to control or exterminate the Coyote by predator control agents seem to have produced an animal that is extremely alert and wary and well able to maintain itself.

PLEASE RESPECT ALL WILDLIFE! Contact appropriate authorities if you see a coyote in your neighborhood. DO NOT feed them, and keep small pets inside at night if you live in an area prone to coyotes. After all, they too are only trying to survive. Remember, they are GREAT controllers of rodent, and rabbit population in our area.

Kiko Garcia makes the USA 14U Team and heads to Nicaragua

Since 1978 USA Baseball has been the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of baseball. It represents the sport in the United States as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and internationally as a member federation of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF).

Nearly every major national amateur baseball organization in America is united as a USA Baseball National Member Organization. As a result, USA Baseball governs more than 12 million amateur players in ballparks and playgrounds across the country.

As the commissioner's office for amateur baseball, USA Baseball is a resource center for its various membership groups, fans, and players. USA Baseball is also responsible for promoting and developing the game of baseball on the grassroots level, both nationally and internationally.

On the field in 2009 USA Baseball witnessed one of its most successful years ever. The World Baseball Classic Team, comprised of some of the best American players in Major League Baseball, kicked off the competition calendar for the organization, and it finished fourth, losing to eventual champion Japan in the semifinals in Los Angeles. USA Baseball fielded the World Cup Team -- its second professional squad of the year -- in September in Europe. Coming off a first place finish in the event in 2007, the team of All-Stars from Minor League Baseball did not disappoint, bringing home the country's second gold medal in the event in a row. The Collegiate National Team competed through a rigorous summer schedule, capping it with a title at the inaugural World Baseball Challenge in Canada. The 18U National Team made program history in Venezuela by winning its first ever COPABE "AAA"/18U Pan American Championships. In Taiwan, the 16U National Team took home the gold medal at the IBAF "AA"/16U World Youth Championships, and finishing the year on a high note, the 14U National Team pulled out a win in a close gold medal final for the COPABE "A"/14U Pan American Championships.

14U NATIONAL TEAM

USA Baseball fielded its first-ever 14U National Team in 2007, and the team was an immediate success, going undefeated in winning the gold medal at the COPABE "A"/14U Pan American Qualifier in Guatemala. Later that year the U.S. sent its second 14U National Team to compete in the COPABE Pan American Championships, where it too took home the gold. Since its 2007 titles, the 14U National Team still has not lost in the event, winning both the 2008 and 2009 COPABE Pan American Championships as well.

Members of the USA Baseball 14U National Team are selected from, among other scouting channels, the pool of players participating in the annual USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS) in Cary, N.C. and the 14U Championships East (Florida) and West (Arizona), which will debut in 2010.

This year, Chula Vista's very own special, Kiko Garcia was invited, along with 38 other amazing baseball players from around the country, to try out for the 14U team. Competition was tough, the best of the best were there, and they were there to compete! And when the final cut was made Kiko was on the list! He is representing Chula Vista again in the "Big Show". JESSICA MCMILLIN - Another Bullet in the McMillin Arsenal

Her youthful looks or bubbly persona fool you for one second. Jessica McMillin wants to kick your ass on the race track. And given the winning tradition her last name carries, she can likely get that done if she hasn't already. - This is the opening sentence in the article by Marty Fiolka in Dirt Sports Magazine on Jessica McMillin.

Jessica, 25, is the older sister to Andy McMillin and the daughter of Scott and Susan McMillin. "I've been going prerunning since I was just four years old," she proudly states. "My father actually had two kid seats in his prerunner, and we would ride around the dunes chasing my grandpa (off-road racing legend Corky McMillin) and my uncle (five-time Baja 1000 winner Mark McMillin).

Jessica works in the family business for McMillin Realty in the Marketing Department, it also happens to be in the same office as the race shop.

Her first official race was in 2008 at a Mexican CODE event, where she and fellow female racer Chelsea Magness raced the Mango Racing Protruck to a second-place finish. The annual MORE Powder Puff event was next, but then she took a huge next step at the start of 2009 by entering the family's ex-Robby Gordon Trophy Truck at the BITD Parker 425 in the Sportsman class. "That didn't go so well," she admitted shyly. Together with co-driver Todd Tenbroek, she hit a bump and rolled a mile into the race. They got the truck fixed, and had a "great time rolling around in the pouring rain and mud" before a broken radiator ended her day.

The team then bought friend Tim Noe's six-time championship-winning Jimco-VW Class 12 car, in which she promptly won an MDR race teamed with Corky's longtime co-driver Hector Cuadras. It was a good start, but Jessica realized after running the 2010 SCORE Laughlin race that it was finally time to have corrective surgery on both shoulders injured by years of water skiing. She is now healing, but plans a rigorous physical therapy program to prepare for another attack later this year at the MORE Powder Puff race and the SCORE Baja 1000.

Marty Fiolka ends his interview with Jessica by asking her about her future goals. She did say that one was to someday beat her brother Andy. She also said she is happy learning from everyone at McMillin Racing. And the one thing that sticks with her the most is her grandfathers motto "You never, ever quit!"

Port of San Diego Awards Funds for CVESD Education Programs at the Chula Vista Nature Center

The Port of San Diego’s Financial Assistance Program generously awarded almost $12,000 to help ensure that the Chula Vista Elementary School District’s programs at the Chula Vista Nature Center would continue operating this year. The Port’s Environmental Projects Benefiting the Bay Program awarded an additional nearly $8,000 for each of the next three years to fund the transportation to the center for needy classes from CVESD. So far, this year the Port has helped make it possible for 164 classes and more than 4,100 students to attend one of the 15 different Coastal Education Programs offered by the Nature Center. More classes are scheduled to attend the remainder of this year as well. These students come away from these programs with a deeper understanding and respect for their local environment and a strong desire to protect this important habitat.

14U Trials: Team reports Tuesday, 39 players arrived to Cary, N.C. to compete for 18 spots

CARY, N.C. - Tuesday marked a busy day for the 39 players who were selected last month to compete at the USA Baseball 14U Trials. The group arrived to Cary in various stages Tuesday, with players from each part of the country reporting to the team hotel.

The group of 39 will hold its first team meeting Tuesday night, and will hit the field at the National Training Complex Wednesday morning for its first workout. The trials team will hold its first Red vs. Blue game Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. ET. The club will play four games through Saturday before the final team of 18 is announced.

On Tuesday, each of the players arrived on separate flights, and picked up their room keys and uniforms before heading off to their respective rooms to relax before the night's meeting. They'll have an early wakeup call Wednesday morning before starting practice at 9 a.m. ET.

The 14U Trials consists of 22 players selected from the 2009 National Team Identification Series (NTIS) and 17 chosen after the 14U Championships, which were recently held in Fort Myers, Fla., and Glendale, Surprise and Peoria, Ariz.

Eighteen players will be selected to the 2010 USA Baseball 14U National Team, which will compete at the COPABE Pan Am 'A' 14U Championships in Managua, Nicaragua from July 23-Aug. 1. The team will be announced on usabaseball.com after the completion of the 14U Trials.

On Sunday August 8th, the official U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition will be held. This is the championship of sandcastle building where the professional sand carvers vie for the title of Master's Champion. Professional and amateur sand carving teams throughout the U.S. will compete in the sandcastle building competition with more than $21,000 in cash prizes. Trained representatives for the US Open Sandcastle Competition will judge all categories. The weekend festivities conclude when the teams are presented with titles and cash prizes presented at the Awards ceremony.

Sandcastle building begins at 9:00am and concludes at 2:00pm. Sculptures are only available for viewing until 4:00pm due to the tides.

Back to School? - Yep, Already!!!

If it feels like the summer just started, well, it did! And for us modified year-round families that also means Back-to-school in July!!! We haven't even broken a 90 degree day yet and our kids are already going back to school, next Wednesday.

I just looked at my calendar and almost fell out of my chair. First, I feel like July just started, second, I feel like the summer barely begun (my son has used his unlimited Knott's Soak City pass only once!), and now next Wednesday is already the 21st of the month and it's back to school for our our Chula Vista kiddos. YIKES!!! Is this what they mean when they say time flies faster the older you get???

Since clearly I wasn't prepared for this, I should stop blogging and start shopping... Walmart here I come!!!

Park View Little League Championship Game is no sleeper

WOW! WHAT A GAME SATURDAY!!! Park View Little League had 2 great championship games going at the same time. It was hard to keep your eyes on just one. Up on the upper Minor A field The undefeated A's were battling it out against the Angles, and on the majors field the favorites Yankees were up against a proud Pirates team that had not beat them once in regular season. But this was for all the marbles.

I tried to stay quiet, I'm big about superstition, but my husband was the third base ump, so a little heckling on my part was required!

The Pirates were the visiting team so Yankees got last at bat, the game was nail biting to the end and ending up in extra innings when a Pirates run was called back because the runner was leading off (no, my husband didn't make THAT call). With hearts in stomachs, moms getting up out of their seats to pace, dads on their toes, in the 7th inning the Pirates scored the go ahead run to put them up 3-2. Remember, the Yankees still have their at bat. Now the Yankees are up, the Pirates put in Ben Ramirez, younger brother to the 6'2" man child from last years World Series, Luke Ramirez. Can Ben do it? Pull out the save?

From my vantage point I could see the entire field. I was standing up by the snack bar with Luke, Andy Rios, Kiko Garcia, Jensen Peterson and a couple other kids. They came to watch kids play on the field that they played on just one year ago. "They seem so small" I heard one of them say. But they also talked about how good they looked and how exciting the game was. So there we all stood, watching the game, pitch after pitch. This wasn't going to be easy. They had a batter on base, now on 3rd, but with 2 outs. Last time they had this they hit a home run to go ahead the Pirates by 1. Strike one we heard the ump say, then strike two. We were one strike away from putting this game away!!! "Come on Ben", I could hear the boys screaming behind me. STRIKE THREE!!! That was it! They did it. Finally, the Pirates beat the Yankees. All season they couldn't beat them, or were they just playing with them and waiting until the big show!

Congratulations to both teams, you put on one heck of a game!

A Stroll Thru Eastlake Villlage Marketplace

When was the last time you walked thru the Eastlake Village Marketplace just to take a stroll? I was there last night just by chance and I had forgotten all the great places to eat, snack, shop, or just relax.

I grabbed a Starbucks and sat outside in the tree-lit courtyard by the outdoor fireplace and listened to a guy play guitar. For a moment I was transported someplace else - away from work, the kids, the house, and I forgot why I had even gone to the shopping center in the first place (to go to Target for laundry detergent).

From my bench I could see yummy places that got me thinking FOOD!!! Miguels, Panda Express, Daphne's Greek Cafe, Bento & Noodles, Jamba Juice, Subway, Islands, Starbucks. Instead, I just grabbed my skinny vanilla latte, cursed my stinkin' diet and walked off to Target to finish my task.

What a beautiful night, what a beautiful shopping center, what a beautiful city! The more I discover about our neighborhood, the more I fall in love with it. What do you love about our city? I'd love to hear from you...

McMillin Does It Again!

The son-father team of Andy and Scott McMillin won the overall four-wheel title in the 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 500 off-road race.

The McMillin’s Ford F-150 TrophyTruck finished the 438.8-mile course, which started and finished in Ensenada, in 9 hours, 15 minutes and 13 seconds for an average speed of 47.20 mph.

Andy and Scott McMillin also teamed to win last November’s Baja 1000. It was the third win in the past four SCORE races for the 23-year-old Andy, who won the season-opening SCORE Luaghlin Challenge driving solo.

It was the second Baja 500 class win for Scott and Andy as a team.

Scott McMillin, 50, claimed his third Baja 500 overall win and sixth Baja 500 class win. He previously won the overall title in 1983 and 1986 while co-driving with his late father, Corky McMillin.

Andy drove the first half of the race and Scott drove the return leg to Ensenada. Scott pulled away from his closest pursuers over the final 150 miles and won by seven minutes and one second over Gus Vildosola Jr. of Mexicali.

The speeds were lower this year on the boulder-strewn course. But 192 of the 289 starters finished — the 66.4 percent finish rate being the fourth-highest in history.

“We’re starting to click as a team and I think we’re the team to beat if we’re having a good day — and we’ve been having a lot of good days lately,” Andy McMillin said.

Homeowners slowly open wallets for improvements

Home show exhibitors say they’re seeing cautious increase in purchases

People are starting to spend money on their homes again.

Not a lot, but enough that paint store owners, home designers and kitchen refinishers are hopeful that this year represents a turn away from the disastrous depths of the recession last year.

“We’re not taking as many vacations, so we’re stuck at home and we want it to look pretty,” said Debby Doyle as she looked at interior design displays during a home show Saturday at the San Diego Convention Center.

She said she was looking for ways to redo the landscaping around her Escondido home to save water and save money. Doyle has decorated many of the rooms inside the home with the help of interior designer Kathleen Lilleeng, who was also at the show.

More people are looking for help decorating this year than last, Lilleeng said, but it’s not like it was during the boom times.

“It’s always about the budget,” she said. To cut costs for her clients, she shops at consignment shops and reuses pieces from their homes.

“People are definitely saying business is picking up,” said Kellie McCormick, president-elect of the San Diego Chapter of ASID, the American Society of Interior Designers.

Big chains are starting to see a difference as well. Both Home Depot and Lowe’s reported increased profits last week. People are spending more on home improvement projects and buying expensive items such as gas grills and mowers, they said.

Those results reflect a small part of what homeowners are doing, said George Whalin, president of Retail Management Consultants in Carlsbad.

“They’re spending some,” he said. “We’re nowhere near back to where we were before, or what any of us would call normal.”

Much of the spending, he said, is for things that simply cannot be put off.

“They’re spending money on repairs, but they’re not spending much money on anything else,” he said.

The difference between today and what things were like just a few years ago was reflected in this weekend’s home show.

Six years ago, when she last put on the San Diego Interior Design and Landscaping Expo, Penny Domschot had more than 500 exhibitors and 29,000 visitors.

She sold that show to a company who later decided not to hold it any longer. With this weekend’s show, called the Stylish Spaces Interior Design & Outdoor Living Expo, there were about 150 exhibitors. Traffic was light Saturday afternoon.

The National Association of Home Builders said last month that its members are anticipating an end to declines in remodeling activity. Remodelers are working more this year, the organization said, but they’re not making more because competition has driven them to lower their prices.

At the high end of the business — remodels costing hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars — times are still tough, said general contractor Jim Sweig.

“There’s a lot less work and a lot of guys vying for the same work,” he said.

Where his company used to have a two-year backlog, it’s now six months. And contractors are giving away services they used to charge for, he said.

That goes for smaller jobs, too.

When Donna Mulcahy of University City recently remodeled her kitchen, her contractor told her she was getting a deal. She is now thinking of getting work done on a patio.

“We’ve really wanted to do it,” she said. “We can afford it.”

And, she said, she feels it’s important to spend money to keep other people working. “It’s our job to feed the economy,” Mulcahy said.

Some people are opting for less expensive re-dos, said Jim Fay, whose Escondido kitchen business, Granite Transformations, installs custom counters over existing counters, eliminating the cost of demolition.

“Our business exploded in April,” he said, crediting prayers and tax returns. And May has been better still.

Another kitchen remodeler, Randy Zeller of El Cajon, said his business has also picked up this year, but it’s different from years past.

Today, it’s people at or near retirement who are planning to stay in their homes for a while and are paying cash.

“Three years ago, you were dealing with people who were writing equity checks,” he said.

Manhunt on for predator who attempted to kidnap girl

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (CBS 8) - Parents are on alert, after a predator followed and attempted to kidnap a 14-year-old on her way to school.

Police say the man slowly drove his truck on Eastlake Parkway Wednesday. He then reappeared, parked his truck, got out and grabbed the girl by her arm between 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. while she was walking to High Tech High School in the 1900 block of Discovery Falls Drive. However, the victim was able to escape.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 5 feet 5 inches tall and about 200 pounds. He is about 28 to 30 years old and was last seen wearing a plain gray baseball cap and zipped up gray jacket.

His vehicle is described as an older tan-colored, Ford F-150 with yellow lettering on at least one side. The truck was towing an empty trailer with a possible California license plate number of 4KW5935.

Our Clubs are open after school, and during summer and vacations when kids have free time and need productive outlets. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Chula Vista follow the Chula Vista Elementary School District calendar. Millenia Project Promises Revenue and Jobs

A massive project in the South Bay could mean thousands of homes, thousands of jobs and millions of revenue dollars for the city of Chula Vista.

The Millenia development is expected to accomplish many tasks over the next two decades. Millenia is a $4 billion mixed-use, high-density development planned for the Otay Ranch area of Chula Vista. The project has already been approved by Chula Vista and the San Diego Association of Governments. Now, the developer, the Corky McMillin Company, is only waiting for the economy to rebound. Corky McMillin Vice President Todd Galarneau told 10News it is always smart to plan when the economy is down and build when it's on its way back up." We have all of our entitlements. We'll be able to hit the ground running as the market recovers," Galarneau said.

Chula Vista has been hit especially hard by the economy. In 2005, at the height of the city's construction boom, Chula Vista issued more than 3,000 building permits. In 2009, they issued less than 300. Chula Vista City Manager Jim Sandoval said Millenia could be the beginning of the rebound. When completed, Millenia is expected to generate more than $4 million in revenue for the city, which is much-needed money for the South Bay city that has cut more than $50 million from its budget in the past three years and cut more than 20 percent of its staff." Four million dollars means a lot of services that we could provide that we cannot provide otherwise to our community," Sandoval said.Millenia, which is being built in the city's planned Eastern Urban Center, would encompass more than 200 acres south of the Otay Ranch Town Center. It's expected to have 3,000 residential units, more than 3 million square feet of retail space, a library, fire station and a hotel." If you were to overlay the boundaries of the Eastern Urban Center over downtown San Diego, it would be 80 downtown city blocks," said Galarneau.

Cricket Wireless Amphitheater is gearing up to open it's gates once again for another spectacular year of ground breaking music!

I personally cannot wait. I just heard on the radio Elton John is coming back. Whoo Hoo. If you haven't seen this man in concert, you are missing one hell of a show!

Great News at a Perfect Time

A collective sigh of relief is being issued by taxpayers who’d not only lost their homes, their dreams, and large chunks of their pride, but who were staring down tax bills that they couldn’t fathom how to pay.

It might not soothe all their wounds, but a measure passed last week by the California State Legislature will, when signed by Governor Schwarzenegger, give some much-needed breathing room to the thousands of Californians who lost their homes to foreclosure or who had to sell them in a short sale.

You see, mortgage debt that is forgiven, which happens when your mortgagor allows you to sell your home short or after a foreclosure, is taxable, both federally and at the state level. A moratorium was placed on the federal tax, but in California, a state riddled with crushing debt, there were serious questions about whether the tax would be levied.

Others affected by this measure are those who got loan modifications that lessened the amount that was owed to the mortgagor.

Assuming that the governor signs the bill, which he has said he will do, it will provide relief to upwards of 100,000 Californians through 2012, when the measure is set to expire.

Our state is certainly one that needs income, and it’s estimated that California will collect about $34 million less in taxes as a result of this bill. No matter how badly the money is needed, however, generating that income at the cost of rendering our taxpayers, quite literally, penniless is too much of a price to pay.

If you’ve been involved in a foreclosure, short sale, or have had mortgage debt forgiven, you may be eligible to claim the relief on your 2009 State and federal income tax returns.
