Port of San Diego Awards Funds for CVESD Education Programs at the Chula Vista Nature Center

The Port of San Diego’s Financial Assistance Program generously awarded almost $12,000 to help ensure that the Chula Vista Elementary School District’s programs at the Chula Vista Nature Center would continue operating this year. The Port’s Environmental Projects Benefiting the Bay Program awarded an additional nearly $8,000 for each of the next three years to fund the transportation to the center for needy classes from CVESD. So far, this year the Port has helped make it possible for 164 classes and more than 4,100 students to attend one of the 15 different Coastal Education Programs offered by the Nature Center. More classes are scheduled to attend the remainder of this year as well. These students come away from these programs with a deeper understanding and respect for their local environment and a strong desire to protect this important habitat.

About the Chula Vista Elementary School District

The Chula Vista Elementary School District is the largest K-6 grade district in the state and CVESD serves more than 27,500 diverse students in 44 schools. Since 1987, CVESD has funded a full-time Science Resource Teacher who is co-located at the Nature Center to provide a K-6 coastal education program fully integrated into the elementary education science curriculum through hands-on experiences supported by classroom lessons. Students get to collect and view plankton, touch crabs and snakes, hike to find native plants and animals and much more! For more information, please call (619) 476-7836 or look us up on the Web at www.cvesd.org.

About the Chula Vista Nature Center

Established in 1987, the Chula Vista Nature Center is an internationally recognized zoo and aquarium exhibiting native plants and animals of San Diego Bay and wetland habitats. The Chula Vista Nature Center was previously owned and operated by the City of Chula Vista, but became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Fall 2009. Located on 3.3 acres along the history-rich Gunpowder Point and the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, the Chula Vista Nature Center provides a living-museum experience while promoting coastal resource conservation and environmental stewardship through education. It is accredited by the American Association of Museums and welcomes nearly 70,000 visitors and 400 school field trips annually, for up-close experiences with green sea turtles, shorebirds, hawks, bald eagle, sharks, stingrays and jellyfish. More information is available at www.chulavistanaturecenter.org or by calling (619) 409-5900.
